Spotlight on … Andreas Stenlund (Harmdaud).

*When did you really get involved into music in general and into metal specific? Who was responsable for your interest in (metal) music?

Well, I got my first electric guitar when I was like 13 or something. But, before that I borrowed my fathers guitar and learned how to play. Metal was there from the beguinning though. Haha! When I was 12 I still remember when I got a mix tape (yes, a mix TAPE, not any Spotify playlist or other modern stuff) from a friend containing among others Entombed, Grave, Death etc. I was a sold instantly.

*Which artists or bands did influence you the most?

There are many, but to mention some I would say Bathory, Cementary, Moonspell, Dissection, Anathema and Katatonia. A lot from the 90-tis metal scene.

*Which instrument do you play and how and when did you learn to play? Did you had lessons in school or private lessons? If so, was that because your parents expected that from you? Or did you learn to play the instruments by yourself? Do yo still follow some lessons?

My main instrument is guitar I would say. But, I play bass and some piano as well. I started playing guitar when I was a kid. I actually took some guitar lessons when I was like 14, but I never really liked to take the lessons. Haha! But, a good thing about Sweden is that all kids get to try out instruments in school. Regular music lessons is like built into primary school all the way up to when you are 15/16. So, you learn the basics in all instruments, and then you can take more lessons in private of you want. But, I mostly learned by myself and by learning like Metallica songs and playing with tab´s.

*Do you follow other or are you intrested in other styles of music beside metal? If so, what is the kind of music you prefer to listen to?

Sort of, I listen to all kinds of music, though mostly if I get to choose to bands in the metal scene. But, I also enjoy to listen to singer / songwriter stuff. Or like the more atmospheric folk stuff like First Aid Kit.

*Is music a full time job for you now or do you have a job beside music? If so, what kind of job are you doing? If you would be really succesful with music, would you quit your other job?

Music for me is like an interest / hobby and something I enjoy losing myself in. Also, I really like the creative part of creating songs and working with the sons. I work in IT in an industrial company as my full time job. I would say to be able to live on the income from this narrow genre that I´m playing is like really far away, haha!

*If you could start a complete new band (something like an all star band) with other musicians on other instruments, which artists would you pick for wich instrument and why? Would you still go for a melodic black / death metal / Viking metal band?

I sort of already have an all star band with my friends (Matte / Simon / Benny) from Fission / Vintersorg! It´s my other project TME that´s is a mix of thrash / black / death metal. It would be cool if we could raise Quorthon from the other side and have him as an additional guitar player though.

*If you had been banned to an uninhabited island and you may pick 5 albums to listen to, wich albums would you choose and why?

Anathema – ‘Judgement’ (since this probably is the judgement), Bathory – ‘Hammerheart’ (never leave the house without it), Batushka –’ Litourgia’ (newly discovered, cannot stop listening), Leonard Cohen – ‘Best Of’ (got to have some good poetry as well), Unknown – Give me a good tip for some new music to discover as well!

*Every new album of a band or an artist is the best one, so they say. – We do know that this release is a re-release of the first HARMDAUD-album. – So here is a chance to promote your album. Why should a music lover buy your album? What are the standout tracks for you on this new album and why?

Yea, ‘Blinda Dödens Barn’ just got released as a beautiful vinyl that all black / viking metal fans must have. Both for the fact that it is a great looking LP, but also for the chanse of discovering HARMDAUD. The mysic is a mix of black / death / Viking with a lot of symphonic arrangements (made by Vintersorg). It is varied with black metal parts, but also slower and more athomspheric parts and there is always something now to discover in the songs. And, it has a good 90´s black metal touch as well. Particullary ‘Vemodet’ and the title song ‘Blinda Dödens Barn’ has gotten a lot of praise. There are of course new music coming up as well! Latest album got released in 2019, and a single during 2020. So, new music will come 2022 in a form of one or two singles!

*Is there a chance that you will promote these songs through live concerts? If so, would you prefer small clubs or big festivals? And is there a chance we can see HARMDAUD in Belgium?

On some occasion I hope that I will be able to perform live. That would have been amaing, and I really think the music will work on the live scene! And, I would gladly come to Belgium and play of course. I would prefer the small clubs, closer to the fans and closer to the music.

Cheers metal heads and keep the metal spirit alive!
