Spotlight on … Januaryo Hardy (Pure Wrath).

*When did you really get involved into music in general and into metal specific? Who was responsable for your interest in (metal) music?

I started to write my own music when I was 14. It was for my first death metal metal band with my good friend in my hometown. They are the ones who responsible for introduced me into extreme metal and its sub-genres. I started with death metal until I discovered black metal by myself.

*Which artists or bands did influence you the most?

I really love music composers such as John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman. But for Pure Wrath music, Wodensthrone and other bands from UK is highly inspired my songwriting.

*Which instrument do you play and how and when did you learn to play? Dis you had lessons in school or private lessons? If so, was that because your partners expected that from you? Or did you learn to play the instruments by yourself? Do yo still follow some lessons?

I used to play guitar in my childhood days with my father. He taught me guitar and bass. But in my teenager days, I started to play my own and find out what I want to learn. My father is more into jazz and blues music while I’m really into heavy metal and experimental music.

*Do you follow other or are you intrested in other styles of music beside metal? If so, what is the music you prefer to listen to?

I used to be a big fan of dreampop and shoegaze but I’m really really selective on it. I’m a big fan of Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and even Alcest. During my daily job, I like to explore more indie pop bands on the internet.

*Is music a full time job for you now or do you have a job beside music? If so, what kind of job are you doing? If you would be really succesful with music, would you quit your other job?

I’m currently working as database analyst in a company. During the night time, I produce other people’s music as mixing-mastering engineer. Playing music means living the life for me. I will definitely quit other job outside music once I have proper income in music.

*If you could start a band with other musicians on other instruments, which artist would you pick for wich instrument and why? (Something Like an “All Stars Band”.) Would you still go for a black metal band? Or would you do something completely different?

I would love to choose improvised experimental music or industrial drone or maybe dark ambient, and play it live with Brian Williams of Lustmord.

*If you had been banned to an uninhabited island and you may pick 5 albums to listen to, wich albums would you choose and why?

Alcest – Shelter

Slowdive – Just for a Day

Cancer – Death Shall Rise

Matt Elliot – Drinking Songs

Wodensthrone – Curse

*Every new album of a band or an artist is the best one (we do know its your first album) So here is a chance to promote you album. Why should a music lover buy your album? What are the standout tracks for you on this first album and why?

I would love to introduce people from outside Indonesia about what was happened in my country back in the days. It’s not political things or related stuff, it’s about how innocent people suffered and dying before they found out the way to a freedom. All these things summarized in the lyrics I wrote and be presented musically in black metal.

*Is there a chance that you will promote these songs through live concerts? Are there contacts with other musicians to promote the album live yet? And if so, would you prefer small clubs or big festivals?

I’m working on it. But first, I need to spread in country I live in or at least in other countries in Asia. Then I will find out how it is and then work it out for Europe. I’m glad I got help from my good friends for live shows. Small clubs are always lovely for me yet big festivals are also challenging for me.
